“Extreme Make-over” shows, health news and doctors have all boasted of the benefits of “microdermabrasion.” Known as the “non surgical,” safe and effective “lunch hour treatment,” “mini face lift” and “Power Peel.” It is a quick and convenient procedure that can be done in less than ½ hour. I strongly believe in microdermabrasion, however in order not to appear biased I did some research.
Fortunately I was unable to find much negative to report. Therefore, it is my pleasure to share with you the fabulous benefits, of this new, very Hollywood, very popular, cosmetic technique.
Beneficial for both men and women, microdermabrasion is a gentle exfoliation and polishing of the very top layer of damaged skin without the use of chemicals, lasers or acids. This is a non invasive skin resurfacing that entails no discomfort, down time or recovery. Microdermabrasion has been proven to reduce the signs of aging such as fine lines, “crow’s feet” and age spots. The procedure helps minimize large pores, acne scars and some surgical scars, stimulates the production of collagen, reduce the appearance of stretch marks, regulates uneven pigmentation, and improve other facial imperfections.
There are several varieties of microdermabrasion machines. My favorite microdermabrasion uses crystals which are sprayed onto the skin resulting in gentle abrasion. Those crystals are than suctioned back along with dead skin cells. Variable controls allow the technician to increase or decrease the intensity of the treatment. Larger crystals, stronger pressure, or repeat strokes may be used for deeper penetration to remove the most damaged skin.
Another type of microdermabrasion uses a diamond tip to ‘remove and vacuum away’ the dead skin cells. Caution must be taken as this tip can be somewhat more abrasive and scratch the skin.
Only an experienced esthetician or doctor can perform the procedure. It is quick and simple and may be successfully used on other parts of the body. A complete medical history and the area to be treated are examined. Treatment begins following cleansing and toning. ( For best results it is important to note that it is not only the crystals creating a “sandpaper” effect that are essential. It is imperative to use “suction only’ before and after the exfoliation. This stimulates blood circulation providing more oxygen to the skin increasing new skin cell growth.) Advise on post treatment care is provided and recommendations to keep the skin moisturized and protected with sun-screen.
To achieve maximum results, 5 to 12 treatments, spaced between 1 and 3 weeks apart are recommended. Following initial sessions, periodic repeat treatments (4 to 6 weeks) are suggested to maintain a glowing complexion. The cost ranges between $150 to $250 per treatment.
Home microdermabrasion kits are also available. They do exfoliate and help prevent dead skin cell build up. As do exfoliating almond/apricot scrubs, rub-off gommage, enzyme exfoliating gels, and creams with aluminum oxide crystals. Nonetheless, for a deeper exfoliation and more visible results, one must consult a professional.
